Short Course in Remote Area First Aid

This course outlines the skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response to a casualty in a remote or isolated site over an extended period of time until medical assistance is provided, or evacuation occurs.

This unit applies to any site where medical assistance is likely to be delayed.

Application and Relevance

The remote area first aid course applies to persons who may be required to provide a first aid response to a casualty in a remote or isolated site over an extended period of time until medical assistance is provided, or evacuation occurs.

 This may include camps, outdoor recreation, hiking, or remote workplace settings.

There are no prerequisite units. Participants will need the ability to meet the considerable physical demands of providing basic emergency life support. Participants will also need oral communication skills to make an accurate verbal report to emergency services and workplace supervisor. Prior to the start of face-to-face practical training, there may be a short knowledge quiz to check language, literacy and numeracy skills, as required.
Progressive assessment throughout the course, including demonstration of practical skills and written and oral questions relating to underpinning knowledge. Note that the provision of CPR must be demonstrated on the floor.
This course provides the skills and knowledge required to recognise and respond to life-threatening emergencies in a remote setting.

A learner is able to apply for Recognition of Prior Learning or Credit Transfer for courses at Vital Skills Training provided this is in line with the RPL and Credit Transfer Policies. Students cannot credit transfer an entire course.
